We often view Matilda Wormwood as the ultimate Icon for book lovers. She represents the Power of the Intellectual over the Brutish. But for the letter "M," we are investigating Malice.
Roald Dahl, known for his Gritty and often cruel humor, originally "engineered" a protagonist who was the polar opposite of the "chic" and kind girl played by Mara Wilson or depicted by Quentin Blake.
1. The "Malicious" Original Draft
This is the most "mind-blowing" piece of trivia for your series. In the first 1980s draft of the book, Matilda was not a Hero. She was a Villain.
The Investigative Detail:
The original "blueprint" portrayed Matilda as a "W" for Wicked and Born-Evil child. She didn't use her Telekinesis to help Miss Honey; she used it to Grievously torment people for her own Amusement.
The Reveal:
In that version, she was a Prankster with no Morals. She eventually died at the end of the book after using her powers to help a group of gamblers fix a horse race, leading to a Disastrous conclusion. Her "soul" was Dark from page one.
2. The "Marketable" Rebrand
You should appreciate the Evolution of this story. Dahl’s publisher and his legendary editor, Stephen Roxburgh, staged an Intervention.
The Investigative Angle:
They told Dahl that the book was Unpublishable because the main character was so Hateful.
• The Change: Dahl spent two years "engineering" a total Reconstruction.
• The Result: He kept the Magic but gave Matilda a Heart. He turned her from the Predator into the Victim of the Wormwoods and Miss Trunchbull, making her Globally lovable.
3.The "Miss Trunchbull" Method
The "blueprint" for the villain, Miss Trunchbull, is a Collection of real-world Horrors from Dahl’s own Education.
The Juicy Trivia:
Dahl was obsessed with the Cruelty he witnessed at British boarding schools.
• The Reveal: The "Chokey" and the Flinging of children by their hair weren't just Fantasy; they were Metaphors for the Abuse of power he felt as a child.
• The Logic: By making Trunchbull an Olympian (a hammer thrower), he "engineered" a physical Explanation for her Gargantuan strength....

4. The "M" for "Metaphorical" Library
For your digital creator side, look at the Evidence of Matilda's reading list. It is a Curated Blueprint of classical literature.
• The Connection: These books aren't random. They are all stories of Orphans or children struggling against a System that doesn't want them.
• The Verdict: Matilda isn't just reading for Fun; she is Investigating how other characters survived their own Misery.
